Memorial Day Veterans Appreciation Weekend Barbecue

       Members of the ROTC of Douglas Jr. High School serve the Tahoe-Douglas moose in the Cinco de Mayo celebration.
       Local outreach organization Reach for Joy will host its third annual Veterans Honor BBQ Dinner on Saturday, May 27 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm while supplies last.
       US Veterans can bring their spouse, significant other, or close friend to a complimentary meal at the High Sierra Fellowship Restaurant at 1250 Gilman Blvd in Gardnerville.
       Lunch includes a choice of three-course meals or chicken, beans, coleslaw, buns, and a dessert bar with frozen yogurt and a variety of toppings.
       Kara Miller, team leader at Reach for Joy, said the BBQ event continues to grow every year, with over 400 dishes to be served for lunch in 2022.
        Until October 2023, The Nature Conservancy’s River Fork Ranch Conservancy invites the public to participate in a special series of science and nature events held on the fourth Thursday of each month. The session will be held at the Whit Hall Interpretive Center from 18:00 to 19:00.
        Experts from The Nature Conservancy and partner organizations in Nevada will share their expertise on topics including water, photography, local seeds, renewable energy, wildlife and more. A donation of $10 per class is suggested.
        On May 25, landscape photographer Chip Curroon will present Capture the Essence of Landscapes. TNC rangeland ecologist Dr. Kevin Badik discusses “Indigenous Seeds of the West” on June 22, and TNC Fellow Dr. Michael Clifford discusses “Lithium Recovery in the United States” on July 27. Additional programs will be announced soon.

        Douglas Disposal Spring Cleaning Week will run May 22-26. Weekly active Nevada customers may have up to six 32-gallon cans (50 lb maximum) and/or bags (35 lb maximum) on regular pickup days at no additional charge. Also accepts bundles one foot by three feet.
       Appliances, computers, furniture, hazardous materials, tires and televisions are not included in this offer.
        Garbage bags, trash cans and/or garbage bags should be placed “at the curb”, i.e. in gutters or along the edge of the roadway. Photos of correct placement are available at douglasdisposal.com.
        On May 5, the Tahoe-Douglas Elks hosted a gala dinner dedicated to the birthday of Vesna and Cinco de Mayo. Elks member Dave Stewart said Douglas High School’s JROTC helped support the event by catering to “all the hungry attendees.”
        In other news, Tahoe-Douglas Elks Honorary Governor Ann-Marie Nissi recently presented Elks member Bob Haug with a special award for his outstanding work on local school scholarships. Elks awards several different scholarships to high school students.
