An Indian nurse traveling for work has been praised for saving the lives of her fellow passengers on a plane.
Geeta P traveled from the southern state of Kerala to the capital city of Delhi for an event in honor of Nurse Award winners Florence Nightingale.
But 30 minutes after the plane took off, the crew issued an announcement calling for help.
Suman, a soldier on his way to Indian-administered Kashmir, collapsed into his seat with no sign of a pulse.
“My colleague fainted in the hospital and I performed CPR on her and placed her in the cardiac intensive care unit. There are several more cases in the hospital. ” she said.
The crew had two vials of intravenous fluids. Another doctor on the plane, Premkumar, came to the rescue and quickly inserted a cannula into the patient.
“About an hour later, Suman was also able to eat something. I sat next to him in the back seat of the plane throughout the flight,” Ms Gita said.
Dr Mohammad Asher, a World Health Organization spokesman who was on the same plane, told the BBC he initially thought Ms Gita was Suman’s relative when she and others ran to his aid.
“I saw a woman and three other doctors, one of whom was an emergency room specialist, rush to their seats,” he said.
After the plane landed, Dr. Ashil spoke to Ms Geeta and was surprised to learn that she had also received the 2019 Nurse of the Year Award from the Government of Kerala.
“It was a very strange coincidence that she went to Delhi to be congratulated by the President because she won the Florence Nightingale Award and then helped save the life of a patient in the air,” Asher said Dr. Er.
Ms. Gita was awarded the National Award in 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the ceremony had to be held virtually. She and other past laureates were invited to Delhi to receive recognition from President Drupadi Mulmo.
Her mention of the award refers to her work during the deadly Nipah virus outbreak that hit Kerala in 2018.
She also participated in disaster relief operations during major floods in the state in 2018 and 2019 and the fight against Covid-19.
Ms. Gita started her career at the Government Medical College Hospital in the northern region of Kozhikode and then worked throughout the state.
After leaving the government earlier this year, she currently works at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
Tens of thousands of nurses from Kerala work in hospitals outside of India, but Ms Gita said she never regretted not going abroad.
