Continuing its long tradition of leading innovation, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIITKGP) is establishing a Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence Research with seed funding from Capillary Technologies Limited.
With a announced funding of Rs 564 crore, the center will cover key areas of AI and related areas such as training, research, education, projects, entrepreneurship and incubation. The funding is for curriculum development, computing infrastructure, simulation hardware and software platforms.
“IIT KGP has long built up deep expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and its applications in several key areas. Now we are leading the AI initiative to meet the demands of 21st century AI technologies.” “

We look forward to continuing our partnership with IIT KGP Partnership investing a similar amount of money over a period of time, makes this artificial intelligence center a true industry leader.”
The course will be developed by KGP IIT faculty, Capillary experts and deep learning industry experts. The curriculum will include an apprenticeship program, short-term credit courses, and a certificate program for internal and external students. The scheme, limited to 70 participants per group, will initially be implemented in Kharagpur and Bangalore and is expected to gradually expand to other cities.
“We are creating a mechanism whereby people can take courses from different locations. We are considering one-year four-quarter certification programs for working professionals or people who have just completed their studies,” added Chakrabarti.
IIT KGP already has AI experts in financial analytics, industrial automation, digital health, intelligent transportation systems, agricultural IoT and analytics, big data analytics for rural development, smart city infrastructure, and security-critical cyber-physical systems.
Through the combined efforts of these experts, Pallab Dasgupta, Dean of KGP IIT, Sponsored Research and Industry Consulting, added: “These experts will work to develop new AI technologies for various fields through user applications, interfaces, training, etc.”
