The Beem Espresso Grind Profession is a new easy-to-use manual espresso machine that takes the hassle out of making espresso, latte and cappuccino. This is the birthplace of espresso, latte and cappuccino. That’s right: Germany.
Making a successful espresso is harder than you might think, which is why there is an officially recognized art critic called “Barista”. Of course, this should not be confused with the term “barrister”, which is a person hired by a lawyer to present a case in court, as if you didn’t know it. As far as I know, no barrister has ever made an espresso while defending a defendant in court, although I’m sure most judges would not have rejected a proposal to sip arabica coffee by hitting it with a mallet.
To become a certified barista, you need to complete a course that takes about three months on average, and sometimes a whole year. During this time, barista students learn all about the group head, moving filter, extraction time, coffee blend, coffee weight, grind fineness, water temperature, pump pressure, and rammer pressure. Once he or she obtains the required barista certification, he or she can take a job in a coffee shop or start his own espresso bar business.
But you’re not here for barista practice. All you need to know is the fastest way to make a real espresso that is just as good (or at least almost as good) as one made by a skilled barista. For example, you can put all your worries aside and opt for the best capsule coffee maker that is neither flashy nor authentic, as a real barista would call it. Or you can choose the best coffee maker that automates the entire process from grinding to extraction. However, while most bean machines are indeed very smart, some of them make espresso worse than most coffee machines. So we are left with the humble manual espresso machine that has been around for a long time. The problem with most manual machines, however, is that they require some barista knowledge to get anything remotely drinkable out of them.
This brings me to the Beem Espresso Grind Profession(opens in a new tab), a manual machine that I find very easy to use and, more importantly, easy to experiment with. I say “experimental” because, as a non-barista, it only allows me to adjust three settings—grind fineness, amount of coffee, and press pressure—and the machine takes care of the rest, like pump pressure. , water temperature and water volume.

Beem is a German manufacturer that has been in the coffee industry for 50 years. However, it was only under the umbrella of the DS group of companies that the company began to focus on domestic coffee and tea making equipment. Beem Espresso Grind Profession is one of the company’s newest products.
Let’s take a closer look. Measuring 39.5 cm high, 34 cm deep and 33 cm wide, the Beem Espresso Grind Profession is quite tall without being bulky. Given its attractive sub-£400 price tag, you won’t find much stainless steel on board other than the tray and front. The fact that the top, back and sides are made of polypropylene plastic treated to look like metal is fine with me as I like the overall design. It’s simple and a bit like a professional coffee bar machine without too many knobs and switches. I especially love the black bakelite style upper trim which gives it a charming retro look. Let’s say it looks amazing on the bench between my stainless steel Grind One Nespresso coffee machine and a shiny red Smeg Lavazza A Modo Mio podulator.
The Beem interface makes it easy to get started. In addition to the power button, there are five other touch controls on the front: two grind buttons for single and double shot, two eject buttons for single and double shot, and a water temperature setting. It also has a huge watch face with a dedicated section in the middle. You’ll love this main part because it tells you when the machine’s pressure is at the optimum point for a creamy, creamy top.
At the back is a huge, opaque 2.8-litre water container with a built-in handle so you can easily fill it, preferably with bottled spring water. Further down the line there is a warm base that can hold about four cups of espresso and to its left is a very decent built-in grinder with 250g burrs with a rubber “aroma” seal.
The coffee maker is factory set to dispense 12 grams of coffee for a single espresso and 20 grams for a double espresso, but this can be changed by holding down the grinder button until your preferred dose is prepared. I love the simplicity of this grinder and the professional way to sprinkle ground coffee into the mobile filter – just place the empty mobile filter between your hands and press one or two grind buttons. You can easily adjust the grinding settings by turning the entire grinding jar a few clicks to the left or right – while grinding, not when the burrs are stationary.
The dual jet filter is a heavy, non-pressure steel block that fits comfortably in the hand. It comes with two filter baskets – one for single hits and the other for double hits. It comes with a thick tempera coffee maker weighing 388 grams. This means you don’t have to press too hard on the coffee to get the perfect seal.
Turn to the right and you’ll find a commercially available steam wand that pivots in all directions on a fairly rigid ball joint. There is a solid dial just around the right corner that dispenses steam for a cappuccino or hot water for an americano. I also like the satisfying click of this dial.
The preset volume of Beem water is 60 ml for single and 90 ml for double. However, this does not mean that 60 ml of liquid will remain in the cup, as some of the water remains on the grinding disc. In the same way, you can adjust the amount of water by holding down the single or double press button. Similarly, you can set the water temperature to four levels – 90˚, 92˚, 94˚ and 96˚C. The factory preset temperature is set to 92˚C.
Rarely seen in espresso machines in this price range, the Beem Espresso Grind Profession comes with two fusers, one for espresso extraction and one for steaming. This means you can prepare espresso and frothed milk at the same time. The machine, meanwhile, is rated at 15 bar, but that’s more of a maximum pump pressure than the more modest 9-11 bar pressure used to make strong espresso.
Everything about this machine feels solid and extremely durable, from the sturdy handle, durable 58mm coffee head and heavy pusher to the tactile milk foam dial and heavy duty wand.
I don’t claim to be a barista so I found this machine very fun to use as I could experiment with different grinds and puck pressures until the needle on the pressure dial hit the magical sweet spot – hitting the middle to make a sound.
I should add that I used some cheap coffee beans that I knocked out in my experiments because I ground at least eight cups of coffee before knocking it off the field. At this stage, I’m not looking for flavor, I’m looking for a golden streak and decent lubrication.
My first attempt was terrible because I set the grind to around 5 and the coffee was too fine for water to penetrate. So the arrow moves to the right and absolutely nothing comes out of the filter. Then I went in the opposite direction until about 15 and the coffee poured out like water from a dish. I eventually found out that my magic grind point was around 9.
Another issue I had to deal with was the pressure I was putting on the coffee in the basket with the tamper turned on. With too much pressure, the water will slowly filter, leaving behind half a glass of black mud; too low, the coffee will pour out too quickly and produce only a small amount of crema. After three attempts, I finally succeeded.
But then I decided to start using the factory settings and reduce the amount of coffee in the grinder by about 2 grams. Don’t ask why. In any case, the result was that although the extraction was flawless, the puck was a wet lump, not the nice and dry one you might see in a barista’s bar. So I emailed my expert friend, Kev Lewis of coffeeblog.co.uk (opens in a new tab) and Coffee Kev (opens in a new tab) on YouTube, and he gave some sage advice: “The wet puck is served with Beem in a standard basket like this one usually suggests underdosing, so I’ll try increasing the dose a bit and see if that helps. Too much free space (gap between coffee cup and shower screen) due to too low a volume setting can result in sloppy wet washers, but usually doesn’t cause any negative effects when it comes to extraction. It really depends on the basket, sieve, etc., but usually I want the start of the bevel on the rammer to be about the same level as the edge of the basket so that it doesn’t sink into or stick out of the basket. Of course, this is not the end of the world, but it is much more pleasant to hit a beautiful dry puck that just flies out from under the ring and falls into the box. “I followed Kev’s advice and now I feel like a qualified barista – I just don’t have a certificate to prove it.
I’ve tested many manual espresso machines, but I don’t think I have one that’s so easy to experiment with. For me, the main thing is that the arrow of the pressure scale is as close to the center as possible.
